The story behind it

Old San Juan sits on a narrow islet at the entrance to San Juan Bay, a walled city founded by the Spanish in the early 1500s. Its streets are lined with brightly painted townhouses in yellow, pink, turquoise and coral, many with wrought-iron balconies where plants spill over the railings. Underfoot are the famous blue-tinted adoquines, cobblestones cast from furnace slag and shipped from Spain in the nineteenth century. Above it all stands Castillo San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, whose round stone sentry boxes, the garitas, have become a symbol of the island. Together with La Fortaleza, the old fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Street life gives the old city its flavor. Vendors push carts selling piraguas, cones of shaved ice soaked in tamarind, coconut or guava syrup. In summer the flamboyán trees burst into flame-red bloom, and after dark the tiny coquí frog fills the air with its two-note call. This brick model gathers those details onto one sunny corner, from pastel facades and iron balconies to the garita watching over the Atlantic.
