The story behind it

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across India and around the world, usually in October or November on the new moon night of the month of Kartika. In the days before it, neighbourhood sweet shops, known as mithai bhandars or halwai shops, become some of the busiest places in town. Families queue for boxes of ladoo, silver-leafed barfi and kaju katli to share with relatives, friends and neighbours, while a halwai at the front pipes spirals of batter into hot oil and drops the crisp jalebi into warm sugar syrup.

Doorways are hung with torans of orange and yellow marigolds, and rows of small clay diyas filled with oil or ghee flicker along counters and steps as evening falls, welcoming light and good fortune. This brick model brings that street corner to life with an open shopfront, a glass counter stacked with jalebi, ladoo and barfi, marigold garlands, glowing diyas and a little jalebi cart out front.
